BRIEF Diploma 2006, member of UKASFP accreditation group
I am a SF Practitioner; a wide range of people come to see me to talk 1:1 about how they want their future to be different. My background is working in the medical setting (acute hospitals, but also people with chronic disease) as a speech and language therapist and from 1987 onwards I was able to learn more about solution focused practice through workshops and a number of courses at BRIEF. I was part of the first group to complete the BRIEF Diploma in 2006.
In 2005 I wrote a book, called ‘Focus on Solutions; a health professional’s guide’ (2nd edition 2016, Solutions Books), describing how solution focused practice can be used with individuals, families and groups within a hospital and community setting. I set up a supervision process (‘Ten Minute Talk’), which helped embed SF principles within my department and I have delivered training throughout the UK and abroad, also contributing SF material to other books in 2009 and 2012.
I left the NHS in June 2016 and continue to provide supervision and training in SF practice, as well as seeing some private clients. I am currently a SF supervisor for a study at City University on SFBT in Aphasia and since 2013 I have been involved in the accreditation process of the UKASFP. I have also recently joined Solution Focused Trainers who provide Level 3 Certificate in Solution Focused Practice (5 taught days).
