NICHELLE DOTTIN-JOHN, M.A(MFT)
Marriage & Family Therapist
Nichelle is a Marriage & Family Therapist with a Master of Arts Degree in Counselling, within the context of individual, marital, couples and family systems, and practices out of the Caribbean twin-island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. Her strong affinity to evidence-based therapies has led her to naturally gravitate towards applying solution-focused principles in her work with clients. Her deepest conviction is to help hurting people heal as she considers doing counselling from the heart her number one priority. Nichelle has witnessed the effectiveness of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) in helping individuals, couples and families heal from past hurts and believes in evoking hope in each and every one of her sessions. It is hope that keeps her clients motivated, optimistic and striving to be the best versions of themselves. When clients have gone through the most traumatic of experiences, battered and bruised by the storms of life, hope is always present. Like the roots of a tree damaged by tropical storms, the roots remain alive for regeneration and regrowth. “That’s hope,” says Nichelle, “and if clients are walking out of my sessions floating on clouds of hope, I would have done my job effectively.”
Nichelle respects her clients’ right to self-determination and to make their own decisions to improve the quality of their lives and relationships. She has the utmost respect for Counselling as a profession, which for her, is not just a job but a vocation – a calling. With that calling, comes an awesome responsibility – one that requires competence through professional training, mentorship and practice. Nichelle embraces her relationship with God as that which keeps her anchored and resilient. She is a great listener, compassionate, non-judgmental, absolutely loves a good joke and considers herself to be hilariously funny (although the jury is still out on that one…LOL).
Nichelle is an artist, lecturer and published author of two (2) books both available on Amazon.com: “Understanding Mid-Life Crisis & Divorce – Strengthening Marriages, Reducing Divorces” and “Indulgence” (a Novel). Her most recent academic dissertation was written in 2020 on the subject of Masculinity, Misogyny and Domestic Violence in Trinidad and Tobago.
Nichelle has been mentored by many notable practitioners in the field and currently practices out of the well-reputed, Douglas & Associates Ltd., in St. Augustine, Trinidad.
